“Terra Patagonia”
Our “Terra Patagonia” collection is much more than just colors. The name “Terra Patagonia” is the term used by Ferdinand Magellan to refer to what we now know as Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. The place is much more than a geographical location—it is an experience that comes alive in the yearning to visit it, the emotions felt when encountering its majestic landscapes, and the memories that linger, reminding us of the wind, the blue sky, the greens of the forests, and the shades of the sea and glaciers. With “Terra Patagonia,” we seek to honor this heritage and help you feel the essence of Patagonia through its colors.
To build this palette, Katty—dyer and founder of Bagual—put her scientific training and experience into practice. She conducted an extensive visual research of Patagonia, reviewing thousands of photos and hundreds of videos. From this research, she identified unique and representative colors of Patagonia and, more importantly, captured their tones and combinations. Because when we close our eyes and think of glaciers, we don’t just see one shade of blue; we remember and envision many hues. When we think of the forest, it’s not just one green—it’s an entire palette of greens. In “Terra Patagonia”, Katty distilled these combinations.
The next step was to choose the colors for the palette. Dozens of color combinations and shades that repeat throughout the Patagonian landscapes were selected. To bring them to our skeins of Patagonian Merino, Katty selected and dyed over 150 different colors. Finally, we spent several afternoons (with plenty of coffee and tea ☕️) choosing the perfect combinations. It wasn’t easy! But we arrived at these 23 colors to present to you in “Terra Patagonia”.
(If you're wondering if we chose 23 because we are biologists and there are 23 chromosomes in the human genome, and “Terra Patagonia” is like the DNA of Patagonia… well, that wasn’t the reason… but subconsciously, it might be! 😄)
Discover the Stories Behind the Colors
Each color and shade in “Terra Patagonia” is inspired by a natural element or an iconic place in Patagonia, as well as how we perceive and combine it in its environment with other colors and tones. Here’s a glimpse into the inspiration behind some of our favorite shades:
-
Natural Crudo (color 000): As white as the glacier and the snow, this shade captures the pristine and untouched beauty of Patagonian glaciers, reflecting the purity and serenity of icebergs illuminated by sunlight. Perfect for creating delicate and sophisticated pieces that evoke the calm and timeless elegance of Patagonia’s frozen landscapes.
-
Deep and Intense Green Reminiscent of Lenga Forests: This deep, rich green reflects the lush lenga forests that cover the Patagonian Andes. It evokes the quiet strength and vitality of these ancient trees, making it ideal for projects that convey resilience and natural beauty.
-
The Water, Ever-Present in Patagonia: Several shades capture the hues of Patagonian waters, reflecting the changing tones of rivers, lakes, the sea, and glaciers. Use these colors to evoke the tranquility and depth of glacial waters, perfect for sophisticated projects that embody the fluid beauty of nature.
-
Calafate Berry: An intense burgundy inspired by the deep red of the calafate berry, a symbol of Patagonia’s untamed wilderness. This color is ideal for standout pieces that embrace the lush, wild nature of the region.
-
Andean Shadows: Inspired by the deep hues that emerge in the shadows of the Andean mountains, several colors evoke the stones, the mountains, and their steadfast presence.
